Preparation is the most important step for drywall before any tile installation project.

I had a spare garbage handy so i could easily slide a lot of the rubble right from the ply wood into the garbage.
Push the mortar through the mesh tape and into the 1 8 inch space between the backer board and the drywall.
I also had a piece of scrap ply wood where i was working.
Remove the tile and prepare the wall according to the corresponding instructions above or tile over the existing tile.
Mix thin set mortar according to the manufacturer s instructions and apply a thin coat over the fiberglass tape with a drywall knife.
Run the drywall knife over the mortar to create a smooth finish and remove any excess material.
It helped protect the counters and appliances.

Since i have yet to install drywall in the room i was considering using some form of cement board in place of drywall on the area of wall that would recieve tile thinking tile directly on drywall was not recommended.
If existing tiles are beyond repair remove the tile and install a piece of wallboard in its place.
To do so make sure all of the tiles are intact and secure.

Would cement board be overkill or is tile on drywall perfectly ok.
The top objective is to create a smooth and uniform surface on the drywall for the tile to be evenly placed.
The tiles really fly if you are doing it right and they get really sharp.
