Using a sequence such as 40 60 100 would be a better sequence to eliminate sanding lines. The last floor i did which was by own i went down to 180 grit and finished it out with a 6 palm sander and 220 grit. These are easily taken care of by going progressivly to a finer grit. Sanding and finishing is the most challenging element of a hardwood floor installation project.

They perform well when leveling a floor or prepping for a finish coat. Sanding levels the edges of the floorboards which can vary from one another by as much as 1 4 inch. A random pattern can be hard to achieve when all the planks are the same length but you can do it using offcuts from previous rows to start new rows. Swirl marks are a huge complaint but they can be.

The sanding process was 40 60 and 100 grit followed with a 100 grit hard plate. I ve used a lot of sanding products and like 3m abrasives the best for all my sanding tasks. Using a worn sanding screen to sand between coats of finish can leave spiderweb like defects in floor finish. I was very upset after staining a section of the floor then noticing this i guess i should have used a light to inspect the floor first.

We recently bid on a 1200 square foot flooring project and were not chosen by the owner originally. A maroon pad had been used with the 100 grit paper on the edger to minimize edger marks. This does happen occasionally but not too often as even though we aren t the least expensive flooring installation and finishing company around normally when everything is considered quality price reputation dust free sanding etc. The process must not be rushed or any details overlooked otherwise the end result will be disappointing at best.

Not sanding a freshly laid hardwood floor and finishing it as is makes the installation less messy and time consuming but it would be a mistake. An expert hand is needed to use the specialized sanding equipment. My fellow wood flooring contractor joshua crossman from washington state calls it chicago style flooring an 80 grit is inadequate to eliminate the sanding marks from 36. The homeowner complained of several swirl marks throughout the entire floor along with the stain appearing to be lighter around the edge of each room.

Its nice and smooth but when i started laying the stain down i noticed ripples banding marks the drum sander left behind.
